In this section John, the gospel writer, turns his attention from who he says Jesus is to who John the Baptist sees Jesus as. When approached by the priests and Levites the baptist says he is merely one crying in the wilderness make straight the way of the Lord and identifies his baptism as a sign for what is to come in Christ.

John, like a sign, is pointing to one who is coming and has come, Jesus the Christ, who is both the Lamb of God and Son of God.
